Transcendentalist Utopia in Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry...

Of the scores of utopian concepts within the 1800’s, most remarkable of the influx was the birth of Transcendentalism. The roots of their religious philosophy extend much farther back into American history, but in essence, rests in the context of Unitarianism. It’s origins also reach overseas to Romanticism, from which they drew inspiration from. Transcendentalism was an important movement that shaped the course of American literature, it’s assertions commonly taking shape in novels, poems, short stories, and essays, the most famous of authors including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Transcendentalists sought for their sentiments to be present in the United States, to redefine man in response to the changing context of America. Since it’s emergence in the 1820’s, Transcendentalism had lasting religious, social, and political implications on the order of society. Unitarianism had developed as a branch of the liberal wing of Christianity , which had separated from the Orthodox Christianity during the First Great Awakening. Unitarians value the â€Å"hallmarks of Christian Enlightenment†, and it’s philosophy â€Å"stressed the importance of voluntary ethical conduct†(Emergence of Transcendentalism). Yet, the Transcendentalists felt something was absent in Unitarianism; the â€Å"sobriety, mildness, and calm rationalism,† failed to satisfy the Transcendentalists whom â€Å"yearned for a more intense spiritual experience† (Emergence of Transcendentalism). 1984 Televisions Vs Telescreens Essay Example For Students

1984 Televisions Vs Telescreens Essay TV rots the senses in the head!It kills the imagination dead!It clogs and clutters up the mind!It makes a child so dull and blind. He can no longer understand a fantasy,A fairyland! His brain becomes as soft as cheese! His powers of thinking rust and freeze! An excerpt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,By Roald Dahl, 1964When George Orwells epic novel 1984 was published in 1949 it opened the publics imagination to a future world where privacy and freedom had no meaning. The year 1984 has come and gone and we generally believe ourselves to still live in The Land of the Free; however, as we now move into the 21st Century changes brought about by recent advances in technology have changed the way we live forever. Although these new developments have seamed to make everyday life more enjoyable, we must be cautious of the dangers that lie behind them for it is very possible that we are in fact living in a world more similar to that of 1984 than we would like to imagine. In 1949 when Orwells novel was published, television was a relatively new invention. Fewer than 10% of the United States households had a television set in them and at this time programming was limited to mainly news-oriented shows. Many people believed that television would never surpass radio as the chief means of mass communication; they could not have been more incorrect. Presently 98% of the households in the United States have one or more televisions in them. What once was regarded as a luxury item has become a staple appliance of the American household. Gone are the days of the three channel black and white programming of the early years; that has been replaced by digital flat screen televisions connected to satellite programming capable of receiving thousands of channels from around the world. Although televisions and television programming today differ from those of the telescreens in Orwells 1984, we are beginning to realize that the effects of television viewing may be the same as those of the telescreens. The telescreens in 1984 served two purposes, surveillance and mind control. Unlike the televisions of our present day, the telescreens in 1984 also served as a device constantly monitoring the citizens actions by means of an integrated camera and microphone in addition to broadcasting continuous pro Party propaganda. Setting aside the surveil lance aspect of the telescreens, it is easy to see to a striking similarity between the televisions in our society and the fictional telescreens Orwell created in 1984. Numerous studies have concluded that the content and amount of television programming watched by individuals especially by children has a direct result on the behavior of that individual. The behavior affected by television viewing can be anything from a desire for a certain food or material good to violent distemper (Zuckerman 1985.) Recently, more and more woman have given up their traditional role of raising their children opting instead to work during the day and leave their children to take care of themselves. Unfortunately, many children find that spending countless hours in front of the television to be a worthwhile way to entertain themselves. Most parents tell their children never to talk to strangers, but what they fail to realize is that every day their children are subject to the messages and ideas of st rangers on the television. In fact, a study concluded that an average American by the age of 18 has spent more time watching television than they have spent in school; this study also went on the state that children spend more time watching television than any other activity besides sleeping. This may explain why an additional study revealed that if a child was told something by his or her parents and then viewed on television something that contradicted what the parents had said, four times out of five the child opted to believe the television over his or her parents. This may not seam like a problem if one was looking at it in terms of factual information, but when it comes to moral values we may begin to understand why our society is in the state that it is. McDonalds Essays (515 words) - Fast Food, Fast Food Restaurant

Using Porter?s five forces model to analyze the fast food industry comes down to; first is the threat of the entry of new competitors. The threat of the entry of new competitors for example, like McDonald?s there will be other fast food restaurants like, Burger King, Wendys, and Jack in the Box, who are all competing against each other to see who?s the best restaurant and the best food. Second there is the intensity of competitive rivalry, which is a powerful competitive strategy and also how they advertise their products. McDonald?s offers different kinds of food compared to other fast food restaurants, by creating their own taste and style. Other fast food restaurants have their own food and style themselves which McDonald?s cannot copy from them. I think that?s what makes it so competitive some people might prefer McDonald?s burgers and others might prefer Burger King burgers. Thirdly we have the threat of substitute products or services. Some people have their own opinion?s by sa ying McDonald?s offer foods that are really fattening, so they would move onto other fast food restaurants that may provide healthier foods. It?s just some way to substitute McDonald?s food with other fast food restaurants. Even prices can affect this force, some places will be cheaper and some more expensive. That is Next is the bargaining power of customers, which affects the customers because of the prices offered by other restaurants. An example of this would be the dollar menu for McDonald?s, it offers a variety of food for an affordable price and other restaurants have adapted to this strategy as well. McDonalds they have other foods that other restaurants cannot offer. Finally there is the bargaining of power of suppliers, there are many suppliers that each fast food restaurants may use, or new employees that each restaurants may seek to hire. McDonald?s has provided millions of Americans their first jobs. I think that McDonald?s competitive advantage over its competitors is their dollar menu. McDonald?s dollar menu generated more than 15 percent of its sales, also their creation of breakfast food which became popular when the McGriddle breakfast sandwich first came out. Also, one of their break through was the Big Mac hamburger, when it first came out in 1968, it was an immediate hit. McDonald?s was faced with a lot of problems like, the falling of their services and quality of their chains. To fix these problems McDonald?s decided to bring back retired vice chairman James Cantalupo. The first step Cantalupo did was cut back on expanding McDonald?s stores and he started to focus on making more sales. By doing that McDonald?s offered new products on their menu, like the McGriddle breakfast sandwich which attracted a lot of customers and became a hit. McDonald?s also focused on advertising, the phrase ?I?m loving it? was introduce by pop star Justin Timberlake and it was widely noticeable by the public. Overall, what Cantalupo did improved the business of McDonald?s drastically
